Hello, and welcome to Tatterhood Review, a fantasy and science-fiction imprint of our parent magazine, Ember Chasm. We’ve just sparked a fire in the fireplace, so come in, take a seat, kick off your seven-league boots, and tell us your fantastical stories over a mug of warm mead or iced nebula juice.

We started this imprint for a few reasons. First, out of our love for fantasy and science fiction. As story consumers, both Miranda and Nathan were raised in the magical realms of seven-shade coats, storm-light drinking bridge men, a certain Mars miner devoted to tearing down a golden society in a far-flung, brutal future. We wanted to create a dedicated space to those kinds of stories, and with Tatterhood, we’ve done so.

Second, because our publishing schedule here is far quicker and leaner than Ember Chasm, that means we can publish more stories, which allows the voices, and the worlds, of more writers to shine brilliantly from all computer screens, like a sky of stars twinkling amid the galaxies of the internet.

Our publishing schedule: We plan on publishing two short stories, two poems, and two visual art pieces online per month. Payment is $10 through PayPal (if you don’t have PayPal, we can work something else out) and submissions are received solely through our Submittable account.

As for what we’re looking for: we want fantasy that exists out behind the famous tavern, out in the strange twists of woods that no one has traveled through before, and no one will again; fantasy that blends the magical and the real and anything in between, that’s brutal and honest to the characters. We want science fiction that’s original, that throws you into the glitching areas lurking between the gears, that sends you soaring to breathtaking skylines, or the deepest pits of the WiFi dark zones.

Fiction Guidelines:

  • Tatterhood seeks fiction within the genres of fantasy, dark fantasy, afrofuturism, high fantasy, paranormal, magical realism, science fiction, steampunk, and anything in between.
  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font, with standard one-inch margins.
  • Please remove all identifying information from your submitted document.
  • Submissions should be no longer that 7,500 words.
  • We are happy to review both short stories and novel excerpts. 
  • Please use .doc or .docx file formats. Submissions in other formats will not be accepted.

Poetry Guidelines:

  • We want poetry that roars and glitches out. Please send us work that contains some form of genre elements, or experiments with subject matter like it. We like themes associated with fantasy and science fiction and magical realism.
  • Poetry should be single spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font, with standard one-inch margins.
  • Tatterhood allows authors to submit one to five poems per reading period.
  • Please submit all your poems on one document.
  • Please remove all identifying information from your submitted document.
  • Please use .doc or .docx file formats. Submissions in other formats will not be accepted.

While we deliberate on submissions to our first flash fiction contest, Tatterhood Review is pleased to open our second flash fiction contest opportunity. We are open to reviewing submissions of all genres—literary fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, magical realism, dark fantasy, young adult, urban fantasy, dystopian, horror, gothic—but are looking for something that feels fantastical, weird, or other-worldly, however you wish to interpret that.

Of course, we most want to read flash fiction that, well, flashes. We want writing that electrifies, that explodes like a ritual gone wrong, that tosses us into a magical whirlpool and throws us out irreversibly changed. Give us worlds we've never seen, magic we didn't know existed, prose that hums with power, characters that are flawed and shattered and troubled.

More specifically, consider the concept of reinvention and exploration. Give us fiction and poetry that takes something old, like seven-league boots, and reinvents it, as V.E Schwab does in A Darker Shade of Magic when she gives her protagonist a coat that turns inside out seven times as he traverses each alternate reality/world of London. Or Amal El-Mohtar when she decided to try a different honey for thirty days, and create a fantastical poem or flash fiction around the taste, texture, and smell of each honey.

Fantasy and science fiction have always felt like source of comfort to us, and we like that feeling, but we also want to experience fresh experiences within the comfortable, too.

Yet, as always, as a final say: take our hand and lead us into somewhere magical, somewhere we can get lost in. That's ultimately what we want.

  • We judge submissions on a monthly basis (so you don't have to wait four months to submit your writing elsewhere if it isn't the right fit for us). Works that are still in progress advanced to the next round, so if you haven't heard from us, that's a good sign. In April, we'll deliberate between the in-progress works to decide a winner and a runner-up.
  • Submissions should be one fiction piece no longer that 7,500 words or five poems, all in one document.
  • Accepted works will be published in print in our print issue, tentatively releasing in April.

  • If you submitted to our previous flash contest, please feel free to submit to this one as well. We only ask that you submit a different piece of flash or a significantly edited version of the flash you already submitted. 
  • Submissions should be unpublished flash fiction under 1,500 words.

  • We are happy to review simultaneous submissions. Just let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere.

Tatterhood Review seeks fantastical fiction and poetry for our print anthology titled "Magic."

Mag·ic. /ˈmajik/. noun. "the power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces."

While the definition above can be used as a general guide for your submission, we think "magic" can have a myriad of additional definitions, especially in fiction and poetry. Seven-league boots, hyperdrives, murderous robots that attain sentience and just want to watch soap operas, bridge boys and stormlight, women who create different faces, a coat that turns inside out seven times, monkeys that disappear inside a bathtub performance on stage, a girl that can taste feelings in cake—all of these are wonderful examples of what we'd like to see. But beyond them, consider mystery, the element of power, how magic can pump through a story in smaller ways, like a child discovering a creek for the first time, or the way prose can make the mundane magical or find the magic inside the everyday. 

In other words, define magic however you wish. We want to read the weird, the unexplored, the unheard of and untraveled sides of the word "magic." So take the reigns, writer—lead us into whatever magic you wish. We'd be very excited to see what worlds you take us to. And, we'd especially be interested in the submissions of unpublished, undergraduate, or underrepresented authors. 

Payment is $10 and a print copy of the issue. We hope (and plan) to offer higher (and cooler) payments in the future.

Tatterhood Review is looking for visual art for our issue covers, and to accompany our short stories and poems. We prefer something that contains fantasy or science fiction elements, especially whimsical digital landscape creations, however we're happy to review art of any sort, style, form, and subject, and all will be considered equally for potential cover feature.

  • We’re happy to review: photography, digital art, drawings/paintings, mixed media, and photos of larger art such as sculptures, tapestries, textiles etc. If you have something that isn’t any of that, still send it over! We’ll take a look. 
  • Payment is $50 and one print contributor copy if accepted for the cover, and $10 and one print contributor copy if accepted to accompany fiction and poetry submissions.
  • You may submit up to five images per submission.
  • Please submit images in .jpg or .png format, under 5mb.
  •  We may contact you for a higher-quality file if your work is accepted.
